Oversikt/Overview
- 1988 – USA fra kyst til kyst, del I & del II
3 uker. Starter i New York City og bor på Long Island, tar ei helg i Washington DC, flyr til Rocky Mountains i Colorado hvor vi besøker slektninger i Boulder og Colorado Springs. Den neste flyturen tar oss til the Bay Area ved San Francisco, hvor vi kjørte over Golden Gate og endte opp i San Joaquin Valley. Vi fikk også med oss en busstur til Lake Tahoe og prøvde lykken på ymse casino der.
Alt var nytt og spennende! Jeg vil for alltid huske denne turen: fra “toppen av verden” i World Trade Center til Golden Gate innhyllet i tåkehavet. Det var helt utrolig for en fersking i Amerika!
- 1989 – Nordøst/New England
4 uker som starter i Boston, vi kjører gjennom Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut og Rhode Island før vi setter kursen vestover til Niagara Falls, New York. Fra Buffalo kjører vi gjennom New York og inn Pennsylvania hvor jeg får oppleve Horseshoe Curve for første gang. Deretter inn i Maryland, West Virginia og østover til Washington DC. Så sørover til Norfolk, Virginia og over Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
Nordover gjennom Delaware, New Jersey, New York City og til slutt tilbake til Boston, Massachusets. Besøkte brevvenninner i Virginia og på Long Island. Fikk anledning til å dra på flere meget bra konserter i Boston-området.
- 1994 – Fra Rocky Mountains opp til det nordvestre USA og deretter krysser vi landet på vei østover til Minnesota
3 uker. Flyr inn til Denver, Colorado, besøker slektninger i Colorado Springs. Kjører fra Denver til Seattle gjennom Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon og Washington. På veien vest stopper vi ved Mount Rushmore, Salt Lake City og ved Golden Spike National Historic Site i nordlige Utah hvor øst og vest møttes i 1869 når de festet den siste skinnen til den transkontinentale jernbanen.
Tilbrakte en uke i Seattle-området og besøkte mange slektninger, kjørte sørover til Eugene, Oregon og traff enda flere slektninger før vi startet på turen østover til Bemidji, Minnesota. Vi krysset de endeløse slettene i Montana og North Dakota. Den siste delen tok oss ned til Twin Cities og Mall of America før vi tok flyet hjem.
- 1995 – Fra Colorado til California, del I & del II
2 uker. Flyr til Denver, Colorado i slutten av september. To dager senere kjører vi gjennom en snøstorm i fjellene som danner starten på Rocky Mountains. Vi fortsatte sørover til Pueblo og svingte østover til Garden City, Kansas hvor vi fortsatte rett sørover og gjennom vestlige Oklahoma og Texas. Derfra fortsatte vi sørvestover mot Tumcumcari, New Mexico hvor vi oppdaget at den gamle Route 66 fremdeles lever i beste velgående.
Været hadde nå blitt mye bedre og vi forsøkte å følge “Mother Road” så langt det lot seg gjøre videre vestover mot California. Vi stoppet i Santa Fe, passerte gjennom Albuquerque og inn i Arizona. Vi gikk på den sørlige kanten av Grand Canyon, kjørte over Hoover demningen og gjennom glitteret i Las Vegas. I Los Angeles møtte vi de to andre vi skulle reise sammen med og den andre uka kjørte vi rundt i California fra San Diego til San Francisco og opp gjennom den vakre Feather River Valley.
- 1996 – Bahamas og Florida
3 uker. Flyr til Miami, skifter til et mindre fly som tar oss til Nassau, Bahamas. Etter bare tre dager flyr vi tilbake til Miami og kjører rundt i Florida resten av ferien.
Key West var flott. En fantastisk reise over alle de små øyene og en storslagen solnedgang. Alligator Alley til Naples. Nordover til Tampa/St. Petersburg. En uke i Orlando hvor vi besøker alle de viktigste attraksjonene. Tok en titt på romfartssenteret ved Cape Canaveral. Så fulgte vi østkysten nedover gjennom Palm Beach og Ft. Lauderdale tilbake til Miami.
- 1997 – Colorado og en rundtur i sørøst
3 uker. Enda en gang starter vi i Denver. Kjører opp og inn i Rocky Mountains over flere svært høye fjellpass til Glenwood Springs. Kom oss over Tennessee Pass som er på 10,424 fot, gikk over Royal Gorge brua som er verdens høyeste hengebru og tilbake til Denver.
Fløy videre til Atlanta, Georgia og kjørte østover til Savannah og nord til Myrtle Beach, South Carolina hvor vi tilbrakte en flott uke. Fortsatte inn i North Carolina og passerte gjennom Charlotte før vi endte opp i Asheville. Kjørte på Blue Ridge Parkway og gjennom Great Smoky Mountains inn i Tennessee. Hadde en flott båttur på Tennessee River i Chattanooga før vi kjørte tilbake til Atlanta.
- 1998 – Boston – Milwaukee og tilbake
2 uker. Flyr til Boston. Kjører vestover gjennom Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland. Sørover til Dayton, Ohio. Nordvestover til Chicago og Milwaukee. Tilbringer flere dager i Milwaukee hvor vi besøker venner fra Kalmbach Publishing og alle hobbybutikkene i byen.
Tilbake til Chicago, østover til Ft. Wayne, Indiana og Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. En kort avstikker sørover til Cumberland, Maryland før vi fortsetter nordøstover gjennom Altoona og opp til Scranton. Fortsetter østover til New Jersey og etter et besøk hos Tony Koester og hans Allegheny Midland, fortsatte vi på nordsiden av NYC og gjennom Connecticut tilbake til Boston.
- 1999 – Sørøst
3 1/2 uker. Starter i Atlanta, Georgia. Kjører til Colombia, South Carolina og videre til Myrtle Beach. Vi leide en leilighet i to uker og hadde nok en gang et flott opphold i MB.
Vi fortsatte nordover til Wilmington og Greenville, North Carolina. Fortsatte så langt øst som vi kunne komme til Kill Devil Hills i Outer Banks området. Vi kjørte ned til Cape Hatteras hvor vi besøkte the Wright Brothers Memorial hvor verdens første flytur fant sted. Vi kjørte inn i Virginia og Norfolk kjørte vestover til Lynchburg og Roanoke. Så satte vi kursen nordover langs Blue Ridge Parkway og gjennom Shenandoah Valley før vi endte opp i Washington DC hvor vi besøkte en venninne.
- 2000 – Four Corners, del I & del II
3 uker. Starter i Denver, besøker en venn i Colorado Springs. Vestover i det sørlige Colorado til Hot Springs og Durango. Mesa Verde National Park og Four Corners hvor fire stater møtes. Fortsetter inn i Arizona og over Glen Canyon demningen og inn i Utah. Besøkte Zion National Park før vi kjørte sørover til en meget nedsnødd og tåkelagt Grand Canyon. Vi så omtrent ingenting.
Vi kjørte gjennom Flagstaff, Phoenix og Tucson før vi kom inn i New Mexico. Vi tilbrakte noen få dager i El Paso Texas og tok en busstur til Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Fortsatte videre østover inn i Texas før vi nok en gang kom inn i New Mexico ved Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Besøkte UFO-museumet i Roswell, tok en titt på Albuquerque og Santa Fe før vi kjørte over Raton Pass i snøslaps og sommerdekk inn i Colorado. En natt til i Colorado Springs før vi tok flyet hjem.
- 2001 – Nordøst
2 uker. Startet i Baltimore, Maryland. Spaserte på “the Mall” i Washington DC. Krysset Chesapeake Bay og kjørte sørover på halvøya med Delaware, Maryland og Virginia, hvor vi til slutt krysset Chesapeake Bay nok en gang. Tok en titt på Virginia Beach og Norfolk.
Nordover til Pennsylvania hvor vi overnattet noen dager i Lancaster, midt i “the Amish country”. Øst til Philadelphia og Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tok en togtur til New York City og besøkte Empire State Building og Frihetsstatuen. Så tilbake til Baltimore og hjem med Icelandair.
- 2006 – The Black Diamond Tour
2 uker. Starter i Newark, New Jersey. Vestover til Harrisburg, Altoona og Horseshoe Curve i Pennsylvania. Tilbake østover til Philadelphia og NMRA-konferansen
Sørvest til Cumberland, Maryland. Fortsetter videre sørover til Charleston, West Virgina. Østover til Roanoke, Virginia og en titt på the Pocahontas Division før vi kjører til kysten ved Norfolk og Virginia Beach. Nordover kjører vi over et av de “syv moderne underverk”, nemlig den 37km lange Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel og over DelMarVa-halvøya til Baltimore. Siste dagen kjører vi tilbake til Newark og flyr hjem med Continental.
- 2010 – The Midwest Tour
2,5 uker. Starter i Chicago, Illinois. Vestover til Rochelle, IL, tvers gjennom Iowa og til North Platte, NE. Sørøstover til Kansas City, KS/MO. Østover til St. Louis, MO. Nordover til Chicago og videre til Milwaukee og NMRA’s 75-årsjubileum. Etter en uke i Milwaukee reiste vi hjem fra O’Hare
- 1988 – USA from coast to coast, part I & part II
3 weeks. Starting in New York City and staying on Long Island, take a weekend in Washington, flies to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, where we visit relatives in Boulder and Colorado Springs. The next flight takes us to the Bay Area of San Francisco, where we drove over the Golden Gate, and ended up in the San Joaquin Valley. We took a bus tour to Lake Tahoe and tried our luck at various casinos there. Everything was new and exciting! I will forever remember this trip: from the “top of the world” in World Trade Center to seeing the Golden Gate in the fog. It was quite remarkable for a Freshman in America!
- 1989 – Northeast / New England
4 weeks that starts in Boston, we are driving through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island before we set course westward to Niagara Falls, New York. From Buffalo we run through New York and in Pennsylvania where I get to experience the Horseshoe Curve for the first time. Then to Maryland, West Virginia and east to Washington DC. Then south to Norfolk, Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Northwards through Delaware, New Jersey, New York City and finally back to Boston, Massachuset. Visited friends in Virginia and on Long Island. Had the opportunity to go to several very good concerts in the Boston area.
- 1994 – From the Rockies to the northwest and eastwards to Minnesota
3 weeks. Flying to Denver, Colorado, visiting relatives in Colorado Springs. Running from Denver to Seattle through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. On the way west, we stop at Mount Rushmore, Salt Lake City and at the Golden Spike National Historic Site in northern Utah, where the east and west met in 1869 when they mounted the last rail of the trans continental railroad. Spent a week in the Seattle area, and visited many relatives, drove south to Eugene, Oregon, and met even more relatives before we started on the trip east to Bemidji, Minnesota. We crossed the vast plains of Montana and North Dakota. The last section took us down to the Twin Cities and Mall of America before we took the plane home.
- 1995 – From Colorado to California, Part I & part II
2 weeks. Flying to Denver, Colorado in late September. Two days later we drove through a snowstorm in the front range of the Rocky Mountains. We continued south to Pueblo and east to Garden City, Kansas where we continued straight south through western Oklahoma and Texas. From there we continued southwest toward Tumcumcari, New Mexico, where we discovered that the memories of the old Route 66 was still strong. The weather had now become much better and we tried to follow the “Mother Road” as far as possible on our way to California. We stopped in Santa Fe, passed through Albuquerque and into Arizona. We went to the southern rim of the Grand Canyon, drove over the Hoover dam and through the glitter of Las Vegas. In Los Angeles, we joined the other two guys that had planned to travel with us. In the second week we drove around in California from San Diego to San Francisco and through the beautiful Feather River Canyon.
- 1996 – Bahamas and Florida
3 weeks. Fly to Miami, switched to a smaller aircraft that would take us to Nassau, Bahamas. After just three days, we flew back to Miami and drove around in Florida for the rest of the vacation. Key West was great and we had a fantastic trip over all the small islands and witnessed a magnificent sunset. Alligator Alley to Naples. North of Tampa / St. Petersburg. A week in Orlando, where we visited all the main attractions. Took a look at the space center at Cape Canaveral. Then south along the east coast through Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale back to Miami.
- 1997 – Colorado and a tour in southeast
3 weeks. Once again we will start in Denver. Driving up and into the Rocky Mountains over several high mountain passes to Glenwood Springs. Then over Tennessee Pass (10,424 feet), went over the Royal Gorge bridge which is the world’s highest suspension bridge and back to Denver. Flew on to Atlanta, Georgia and drove east to Savannah and north to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where we spent a great week. Continuing into North Carolina and passed through Charlotte before we ended up in Asheville. Drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway and through the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Had a great boat trip on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga before we drove back to Atlanta.
- 1998 – Boston – Milwaukee and back
2 weeks. Flew to Boston. Drove west through Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland. South of Dayton, Ohio. Northwest to Chicago and Milwaukee. Spendt several days in Milwaukee, where we visited friends from Kalmbach Publishing and went through all the hobby shops in the city. Back to Chicago, east to Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A short detour south to Cumberland, Maryland, before continuing northeast through Altoona and up to Scranton. Continued east to New Jersey and after a visit with Tony Koester and his Allegheny Midland, continued on the north side of NYC and Connecticut back to Boston.
- 1999 – Southeast
3.5 weeks. Started in Atlanta, Georgia. Drove to Colombia, South Carolina and on to Myrtle Beach. We rented an apartment for two weeks and had once again a great stay in MB. We continued north to Wilmington and Greenville, North Carolina. Continuing as far east as we could come to Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks area. We drove down to Cape Hatteras, where we visited the Wright Brothers Memorial where the world’s first flight took place. We drove into Virginia and stayed a night in Norfolk before we drove west to Lynchburg and Roanoke. Then we set course northward along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Shenandoah Valley before we ended up in Washington DC where we visited a girlfriend.
- 2000 – Four Corners
3 weeks. Start in Denver, visited a friend in Colorado Springs. West through southern Colorado to Hot Springs and Durango. Mesa Verde National Park and Four Corners. Continue in to Arizona and across the Glen Canyon dam and into Utah. Visited Zion National Park before driving south to a snowwy and foggy Grand Canyon. It was impossible to see anything of the canyon.
We drove through Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson before entering New Mexico. We spendt a few days in El Paso, Texas and went on a bus ride to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Continued east throught the southwest tip of Texas before we once again entered New Mexico and went down into the Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Visited the UFO-museum in Roswell, went to Albuquerque and Santa Fe before we went over Raton Pass with snow on the Interstate and back to Colorado. One more night in Colorado Springs before we flew home from Denver.
- 2001 – Northeast
2 weeks. Started in Baltimore, Maryland. Walked on the Mall in Washington DC. Crossed the Chesapeake Bay and drove south on the peninsula of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, where we finally crossed the Chesapeake Bay. Took a look at Virginia Beach and Norfolk. North to Pennsylvania where we spent a few days in Lancaster, in the middle of the Amish countryside. East to Philadelphia and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Took a train to New York City and visited the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Then back to Baltimore and home with Icelandair.
- 2006 – The Black Diamond Tour

Northwards we drove over one of the “seven modern wonders”, namely, the 37km-long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the DelMarVa Peninsula to Baltimore. Last day we return to Newark and fly home with Continental.
